Exploring the Gifts of the Holy Spirit Lesson Plan


The gift of the Holy Spirit is a central belief in Christianity. It is believed that the Holy Spirit is given to believers as a guide and comforter, and that it grants them various spiritual gifts such as wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.

7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

  1. Wisdom: The ability to understand and apply spiritual truths and principles in a way that benefits oneself and others.
  2. Understanding: The ability to comprehend and interpret the meaning of spiritual truths and principles.
  3. Counsel: The ability to offer guidance and advice that is in line with biblical principles and helps others make good decisions.
  4. Fortitude: The ability to remain strong and steadfast in the face of adversity and temptations, and to persevere through difficulties.
  5. Knowledge: The ability to acquire and understand biblical and theological information and to apply it in a practical way.
  6. Piety: The ability to have a deep reverence and devotion to God and to live a life that is pleasing to Him.
  7. Fear of the Lord: The ability to have a deep respect and awe of God and to live in a way that reflects that respect and awe.

Objective: 

By the end of the lesson, students will have a better understanding of the different gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they can use them in their daily lives as believers.

Lesson Outline: 

  1. Definition and origin of the gifts of the Holy Spirit 
  2. The different spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit 
  3. How to identify and use your spiritual gifts 
  4. The importance of using your spiritual gifts in the service of others.

Group Activity:

  • Students will work in small groups to research and present on one of the spiritual gifts mentioned in the lesson (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord)
  • Students will share their findings with the class and discuss how they can use that gift in their daily lives as believers.

Individual Activity:

  • Students will take a spiritual gifts assessment and reflect on their results.
  • Students will make a plan for how they can use their spiritual gifts in their personal lives and in the service of their community.

Prayer:

Dear God,

Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. We ask that you help us to understand and use the gifts you have given us. Help us to have wisdom to make good choices, understanding to learn new things, and the courage to do what is right.

Please give us the gift of giving good advice, being strong and not giving up, and having knowledge about you and your teachings. Help us to be devoted to you and to show respect to you always.

Thank you for the gifts you give us.

Amen.

Students will be reminded that each of them has been uniquely gifted by the Holy Spirit, and that it is important to use these gifts to serve others and bring glory to God. Encourage them to be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit in their lives and to use their gifts in ways that will be most beneficial to others.
