St. Peter, also known as Simon Peter, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and the first leader of the Christian Church. He is considered by many to be the first Pope. According to the Bible, Peter was a fisherman from the village of Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee. He was called by Jesus to be a disciple and fisherman of men, along with his brother Andrew. Peter quickly became one of Jesus' closest followers and is mentioned frequently in the Gospels. During Jesus' ministry, Peter played a prominent role, often speaking on behalf of the disciples and making important confessions about Jesus' identity. For example, in Matthew 16:16, Peter declares Jesus to be the Messiah, and Jesus responds by saying that Peter is the rock upon which He will build his church.
