Lesson Objective:  To understand the significance of Ash Wednesday and its role in the Catholic faith Materials:  Bibles, pencils, copies of the Ash Wednesday worksheet Lesson Plan: 1. Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about Ash Wednesday. Allow for a few volunteers to share their knowledge. 2. Introduce the concept of Ash Wednesday as the first day of Lent, a season of fasting, repentance, and spiritual discipline in the Catholic faith. Explain that Ash Wednesday is observed by Catholics around the world, and that it is a time to prepare for Easter and reflect on one's relationship with God. 3. Lent is a period of fasting, repentance, and spiritual discipline in the Christian religion that occurs during the 40 days leading up to Easter. The origins of Lent can be traced back to the early Christians, who would fast and pray in preparation for Easter. The word "Lent" comes from the Old English word "lencten," which means "spring." Lent was originally a time when people would give up certain foods and activities in preparation for the spring season. It was also a time for spiritual preparation for the celebration of Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Over time, the traditions of Lent have evolved, but the purpose of the season has remained the same.
