Stewards of Creation: Caring for the Environment Lesson Plan

As Catholics, we believe that God created the world and everything in it, and that we are called to be stewards of his creation. Caring for the environment is not only important for the health and well-being of our planet, but it is also a way for us to show respect for the gift of creation that God has given us. In this lesson, we will explore what it means to be a good steward of creation from a Catholic perspective, and discuss ways that we can care for the environment in our daily lives.

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of caring for creation from a Catholic perspective
  • Identify ways in which they can care for the environment in their daily lives
  • Reflect on their own responsibilities as stewards of creation

Lesson Outline:

I. Introduction to the concept of stewardship

  • Definition of stewardship
  • Quotes from the Bible and Catholic teachings on the importance of caring for creation (e.g. "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it" - Psalm 24:1; "Laudato Si', My Brother Sun" - Pope Francis)

II. The environmental challenges facing our world today

  • Discussion of environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and resource depletion
  • The impact of these issues on people and the planet

III. Catholic teachings on caring for creation

  • The principle of subsidiarity (the idea that problems should be solved at the most local level possible)
  • The option for the poor (a preferential option for the needs and concerns of the poor and vulnerable)
  • The concept of integral ecology (the idea that we must consider the relationships between all aspects of the natural world, including human, social, and economic factors)

IV. Practical ways to care for the environment

  • Simple actions that individuals can take in their daily lives (e.g. reducing energy consumption, using reusable bags, conserving water)
  • The role of communities and governments in caring for the environment

V. Reflection and discussion

  • Small group discussion: How can we as Catholics live out our call to be stewards of creation in our daily lives?
  • Whole group discussion: What are some challenges that we may face in trying to care for the environment, and how can we overcome them?

Activities for Groups and Individuals:

  • Have students research and present on one environmental issue of their choice (e.g. climate change, deforestation, plastic pollution)
  • Brainstorm and create a list of simple actions that individuals can take to reduce their environmental impact
  • Plan and carry out a community service project related to environmental conservation (e.g. beach clean-up, tree planting, educational campaign)

Prayer:

Dear God,

Thank you for the beautiful world you have created for us. It is full of so many amazing things to see, and I am grateful for the chance to explore and learn about them.

Please help me to always remember that I am a steward of your creation, and that it is my responsibility to take care of the earth. Guide me in making choices that are kind to the environment and to all living creatures.

Thank you for loving me and for giving me the opportunity to serve you through caring for your creation.

Amen.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, caring for creation is an important responsibility that we have as Catholics. By understanding the environmental challenges facing our world and the teachings of the Catholic Church on this issue, we can take concrete steps to protect and preserve the gift of creation that God has given us. By living out our call to be stewards of the earth, we can help to create a more sustainable and just world for all.
